Northern East Anglia: Where and How to Recycle Your Christmas Tree After the Holidays January 2022

Northern East Anglia councils and boroughs

Most areas have either :

  • Kerbside collection (in some cases, cut the tree and put in the green waste bin - Some allow the whole Christmas tree to be placed by the kerb), or
  • Drop-off locations or
  • Both

In ALL cases, remove all ornaments, tinsel, decorations, lights, stands, pots, planters, netting, etc.

Some household waste and recycling collections have been slightly delayed as a result of the national shortage of HGV drivers, which is affecting haulage sectors throughout the UK. Most residents will not see any change from their normal waste collections dates as over 98% of all collections are unaffected, but...

Always follow the link (click on the council or borough name) to get the most current information. There are often last minute changes; do NOT assume nothing has changed since we last revised this page!.

Cambridgeshire

  • Cambridge - kerbside collection,
Arthur Rank Hospice usually collects trees in Cambridge and surrounding area for a voluntary donation. The collection usually happens around the 8th to 11th of January.
    Volunteers collect trees from postcode areas CB1, CB2, CB3, CB4, CB5, CB22, CB23 & CB24, PE19, PE27, PE28, PE29, CB6, CB7.Register on the Just Helping website.Registrations close at 10am on 4 January 2022.

  • East Cambridgeshire - kerbside collection,
They collect Christmas trees when green waste collections resume after 28 January 2022. Please make sure that your tree is cut into manageable pieces (no higher and no wider than your wheeled bin), remove all decorations and leave out alongside your Food and garden waste bin on your scheduled collection date. Pieces need to be placed in the bin loosely, so the bin can be emptied without branches getting stuck. If space is an issue, please store them in a garden, a suitable bin store or outside space if possible, or take them to the Household Waste Recycling Centre at Witchford.
You could also add them to your compost heap or chip them down for use on your garden.
Unfortunately, artificial trees cannot be recycled, and should be taken to your local recycling centre, if no longer needed.
For more recycling tips over the festive period, visit the East Cambridgeshire Christmas recycling page.

  • Huntingdonshire - kerbside collection,
Real Christmas trees can be put next to your bin for composting in January. If the tree is taller than your bin, please chop it to fit inside your bin, with the lid closed. Email: wmt@cambridgeshire.gov.uk.

  • Peterborough -
Oddly, their website is silent about Christmas trees. Presumably, you may cut them up and place them inside your brown bin.
