Northwest England: Where and How to Recycle Your Christmas Tree After the Holidays January 2022

Most areas have either :

  • Kerbside collection (in some cases, cut the tree and put in the green waste bin - Some allow the whole Christmas tree to be placed by the kerb), or
  • Drop-off locations or
  • Both

In ALL cases, remove all ornaments, tinsel, decorations, lights, stands, pots, planters, netting, etc.

Some household waste and recycling collections have been slightly delayed as a result of the national shortage of HGV drivers, which is affecting haulage sectors throughout the UK. Most residents will not see any change from their normal waste collections dates as over 98% of all collections are unaffected, but...

Cheshire

  • Cheshire - kerbside collection, or drop-off at a recycling centre
    Several hospices will collect your Christmas tree for a small donation:
    The Hospice of Good Shepherd in Chester,
    St Luke's Cheshire Hospice in Winsford and
    East Cheshire Hospice in Macclesfield.
    Find the closest and arrange a collection here and entering your postcode.

    Cheshire West and Chestermay drop off trees at the following:

    Kerbside: Real Christmas trees may be stripped of decorations, cut up and placed fully inside your garden bin.

Cumbria

Greater Manchester

  • Manchester - kerbside collection, or drop-off at a recycling centre
    You can recycle your real Christmas tree in January. Removing any lights or decorations and also the wooden base or stand (the wooden bases are too solid to process in our machines). All you have to do is:
    Kerbside - Leave the tree next to your green bin on any of your green bin collection days in January
    Drop-off - take it to your local tip or Household Waste Recycling Centre
    Flats - if you live in a flat or apartment, please speak to your caretaker or building manager. If this is not possible, please send an email to: Christmas.Tree.Manchester@biffa.co.uk with your name and address, a description of the location where you'll leave the tree and when you'll be putting it there. We will collect it during January. Please do not place the tree behind any locked doors or gates.
    Artificial trees can not be recycled.

Lancashire

Merseyside

  • Merseyside - drop-off at a recycling centre
    Bring your real Christmas trees to Merseyside Recycling Centres where they'll be shredded and turned into chippings for compost. Phone: (0151) 255 1444

  • Liverpool - drop-off at a recycling centre
    Take your tree to the council's recycling centres
    So will these collection points 26 December to 31 January.

    St John's Hospice in Wirral is behind a project to collect Christmas trees this year in exchange for donations.They collect from your home during the second week in January. You must register for this service on the St John's Hospice website .
